On 25 August, Wellington College Education (China) - Tianjin welcomed new pupils and their families to our 2026–2027 New Pupil Induction Day. From Early Years to Senior School, pupils arrived with their parents for a carefully planned introduction to school life. The programme was designed to support a smooth transition from home to school and to help families feel confident about the year ahead.

The morning opened with a whole-school welcome assembly at the Seldon Theatre. Our Master, Dr Yang Yang, shared with new families the college’s rich educational heritage and global perspective, elaborating on the profound meaning behind the school’s motto, “Be You. Be More.”

She shared: “At Wellington, we inspire our children to be the best version of themselves, to take pride in where they come from and to be the change they wish to see in the world. Through a proven & progressive curriculum, a strong local and international community, and an individual success pathway, we are committed to maximising each pupil’s potential. Our five core values—Kindness, Responsibility, Respect, Courage, and Integrity—underpin our community and guide our pupils as they grow.”

The day also marked the first Master’s Scholarship award ceremony. This year’s recipients were Adam and Tony from the Class of 2026, who have both received offers from the University of Oxford. Adam will read Human Sciences, while Tony will study Physics through a four-year integrated master’s degree.

Both pupils shared reflections on their time at Wellington. Adam spoke about the importance of trust—how the confidence placed in him helped him move beyond shyness and take on new challenges, from public speaking to performing on stage.

Tony highlighted independence, describing how Wellington encouraged him to think for himself, learn with greater autonomy, and build resilience and collaboration. He also thanked the university counsellor team and staff for their support throughout the application process.

Their stories offered a clear example of Wellington’s holistic education and the opportunities available when pupils are supported to grow in confidence and character.

After the assembly, the senior leadership team welcomed families and introduced a range of activities tailored to each age group. Pupils had time to meet staff, explore their learning spaces, and settle in through relaxed, age-appropriate sessions. Throughout the day, senior pupil volunteers guided families around the campus, answered questions, and shared their own experiences, providing a friendly and reassuring presence.

From the heartfelt words of the school’s leadership to the thoughtful support from older pupils, the New Pupil Induction Day reflected Wellington’s commitment to warm, personal education and provided new families with a genuine insight into our holistic educational approach. As the day drew to a close, pupils left the campus full of anticipation. Their Wellington journey had only just begun.
