We are delighted to introduce the Junior Duke programme to Nest in the Early Years: Nano Duke (Nursery), Micro Duke (Reception), and Mini Duke (Year 1). Built around Wellington’s values of kindness, integrity, responsibility, respect, and courage, these awards are practical, engaging, and enjoyable. Through meaningful challenges at school and at home, they help our youngest pupils develop confidence, independence, and resilience.
Along the way, children will develop wonderful life skills and positive habits, from cooking and creating, serving others and showing kindness, exploring personal interests and developing musical abilities, to giving thanks and practising gratitude, exercising and keeping healthy, caring for others, learning safety practices, and becoming Eco Warriors. Just as importantly, Junior Duke brings families together and strengthens our school–home partnership, creating natural conversations, family fun and a real community feel as children progress and are celebrated in school with certificates and badges.

Ms Jordan, Pastoral Lead and Nursery Teacher, shared: “I’m delighted by how closely our Nano Duke activities reflect the nine key competencies we value as a school. More than a simple task booklet, the programme offers thoughtful everyday experiences that build skills gently and meaningfully.”

“Take our ‘Little Helper at Home’ challenge, for example: matching socks, clearing the table, and sorting recycling. These simple activities develop a surprising range of skills. Matching socks supports early maths through sorting, handling socks and cutlery strengthens fine motor control, and completing each task carefully helps children feel capable and confident. Conversations with parents—such as ‘How should we sort this?’ and ‘Why do we do it this way?’—also create valuable opportunities for communication and self-expression.”

“Seeing the children so engaged in tidying and sorting, their eyes bright and their faces full of pride, has been deeply rewarding. They are doing more than simple chores; they are discovering meaning and value in everyday tasks. We are also especially grateful to our parents. Your support and the way you capture these moments leave a lasting mark on your child’s journey. In many ways, each Nano Duke activity becomes a small family project, building skills while creating precious memories together. We look forward to welcoming more families as we continue this journey side by side, helping children grow in confidence and shine through the small moments of daily life.”
Parents also notice every little bit of their children’s growth, and it warms their hearts. Xinyue’s mother shared with us: “I really enjoyed seeing Xinyue take part in Nano Duke and felt it was such a fun and meaningful experience. Some of the tasks were things we might not normally think to ask her to try, such as folding clothes and sorting cutlery, but she really enjoyed them and felt very proud afterwards. Creating things with cardboard boxes was another lovely moment. She spent the whole afternoon playing and creating houses with her brother and younger sister, and it was wonderful to see them using their own ideas, working together and making things with their hands.”

Henry’s mother shared: “Nano Duke gave our little one the idea of a ‘task’ for the first time. It has provided so many hands-on opportunities. Our child was absolutely delighted after completing the tasks, and it has also helped us create many wonderful family memories.”

We look forward to nurturing confident, capable and caring young Wellingtonians through this special journey. In the future, we hope to join hands with even more families, stringing together these small, shining moments into the most precious memories of our children’s childhood. Let us continue to work side by side — sowing seeds in everyday life, watering them with companionship, and patiently waiting for every little seed to grow into its own unique light.
