Director of Music

This year, our school stepped into a world that is equal parts macabre and heartfelt with The Addams Family School Edition. This show delights audiences with its gothic humour while quietly asking a timeless question: what happens when “normal” collides with unapologetically different? Beneath the deadpan jokes and eerie atmosphere lies a surprisingly tender story about family, identity, and learning to accept change.

With music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, the score demanded versatility from everyone involved. It moves quickly between bold ensemble numbers, intimate character songs, and tightly timed comedic scenes where musical precision is inseparable from storytelling. The cast had to balance vocal control with physical comedy, and the orchestra had to support frequent mood shifts—snapping from playful darkness to sincere warmth in a matter of bars.

One of the central challenges of staging The Addams Family is that its comedy only truly lands when rhythm, diction, and timing are exact. The “spookiness” is not just in costumes and lighting; it lives in the pacing of dialogue, the crispness of cut-offs, and the ensemble’s ability to react as one unit. Our pupils rose to that challenge with focus and stamina, maintaining energy through demanding rehearsals while keeping the performance style sharp, stylised, and consistent.

The harmonious integration of drama and music once again proved to be a linchpin in our production. Having the opportunity to collaborate with the talented drama director, Ms Hannah Bond, again was indeed fortuitous. Her inventive staging and character work, intertwined with the expressive singing and instrumental performances of our cast and orchestra, brought the Addams universe vividly to life; never forcing the comedy, but allowing it to emerge naturally through truthful performance.

图片

Ms Emma Chen, building on her strong legacy in past school productions, co-produced the show with remarkable finesse and attention to detail. Mr Jason Yan brought his artistic expertise to the forefront, co-designing the set with a keen eye for atmosphere and storytelling clarity, ensuring each scene flowed smoothly while preserving the show’s distinctive aesthetic. Mr Bingyan and our student lighting team shaped the stage picture with precision—using contrast, colour, and shadow to support both comedy and emotion.

图片

Ms Meghan Jones led the makeup design with creativity and care, crafting bold, stage-ready looks that enhanced character while still allowing every expression to read clearly from a distance. Makeup artistry, supported by parent volunteers and pupil helpers, boldly defined characters for the stage while still allowing performers’ expressions to be read clearly from a distance. Ms Sophia Shen, Ms Iris Ni, and Ms Gloria Zhu’s choreography added vitality and unity to the ensemble work, and Ms Hyunhi Kim’s voice coaching strengthened both vocal confidence and stylistic consistency across the cast.

图片

Apart from the cast’s vibrant performances, the orchestra provided a foundation that was both steady and characterful. The score requires sensitivity: it must drive the comedy without overpowering it, and it must support emotional scenes without becoming sentimental. Our musicians listened closely, adjusted constantly, and sustained a confident sense of ensemble—ensuring the stage and pit moved together as one.

Despite familiar obstacles—tight preparation time, competing schedules, and the sheer complexity of mounting a full-scale musical, the resilience and commitment of our pupils shone through. I was especially amazed that our veteran Year 13 actors, musicians, and production team members continued to participate so fully despite the pressure of their learning and the demands of an important academic year.

I was equally struck by the versatility and talent across the cohort: pupils grew into entirely new responsibilities with confidence—last year’s Keyboard 3 stepping up as our drummer this year, and last year’s Keyboard 1 taking on the iconic role of Morticia, reminding us that school productions are not only about polishing what pupils already do well, but about discovering what else they can become. They pushed their limits and worked tirelessly to refine details that audiences may never consciously notice, but always feel: clean transitions, committed character choices, and the discipline to make every moment look effortless.

Beyond the performance itself, this production reaffirmed the broader value of musical education in school life. A musical asks pupils to develop far more than notes and lines: it builds disciplined practice habits, sharpens listening and ensemble awareness, strengthens communication and leadership, and nurtures confidence through real responsibility in a high-stakes, collaborative setting.

It also creates clear pathways for pupils with strong musical talent—through featured roles, pit orchestra and section leadership, composition/arranging and rehearsal support, and technical opportunities such as sound, lighting, and stage management, so that musicians, performers, and production specialists alike can deepen their craft and gain experience that prepares them for further study and future creative work.

This production also offered a meaningful moment of reflection for those reaching the end of their musical journey in Wellington. This production also offered a meaningful moment of reflection for those reaching the end of their musical journey in Wellington.

Emily, a Year 13 pupil who has been one of the leads since her first show when she joined in Year 9, shared what the school musicals have meant to her across her time here:

图片

“I enrolled Wellington in the 2021–2022 school year, which means this is my fifth and final year at Wellington. I’ve truly grown during my time here, and the musical productions have been at the heart of that journey. I’ve had the honour of playing lead roles for four consecutive years in the annual school musical productions. Every year has been incredibly exciting—because the memories from the musicals are often the most vivid ones I carry with me now that I’m preparing to graduate in just a few months.

图片

Some of my closest cross-year friends have also been formed through rehearsals for musicals, and I’m grateful for how this experience brought people together. It’s been special to meet so many students who share the same passion for singing and performing on stage. Looking back, I feel that each performance marks a step of progress. Over these four years, I can see how much I’ve grown, not only in confidence and technique, but also in how I collaborate, prepare, and commit to performance. I’m proud of myself, and proud of what I’ve been able to achieve through these productions.”

Emily has now received offers to read Music at King's College London, the University of Bristol, Royal Holloway, University of London, and the Royal College of Music. We wish her every success and a bright future ahead on her musical path.

Looking back on The Addams Family School Edition, I feel most proud not only of what appeared onstage, but of what happened behind it: pupils and staff committing to precision, style, and storytelling as one ensemble, and meeting a demanding score and tightly timed comedy with maturity and care. The production succeeded because every department—performance, orchestra, backstage, design, and technical—worked with the same purpose, and because pupils embraced growth, change, and responsibility at every level. In the end, this show captured exactly what the Addams world is really about: celebrating individuality, supporting one another through change, and finding warmth and belonging in the most unexpected places.
