When I was five, I began learning the erhu, flipping through the periodic table and historical maps in books, and placing my first stones on the Go board. These seemingly unrelated experiences took root like seeds, shaping the way I first came to understand the world: finding order through rhythm, thinking in steps through strategy, and feeling connection through collaboration, developing in an integrated way across different fields. They did not point towards any specific destination, but they gifted me with a valuable foundation: staying open to diverse experiences and immersing myself deeply in the process.

An Academic Beginning:

From Maths Competitions to the Life Sciences

This trait found its full expression after I joined Wellington College Education (China) - Tianjin. In 2023, at my maths teacher's recommendation, I tried my hand at academic competitions for the first time. The gold award in the UK Mathematics Trust’s Senior Mathematical Challenge (SMC) was a surprising start. It affirmed my logical abilities and gave me, for the first time, genuine confidence in my academic potential.

My biology teacher was the first crucial guide on this path. He never confined knowledge to the textbook. In the lab, he taught me how to design my own experiments to explore variables. When I grew interested in biology competitions, he placed a stack of weighty English resources and past papers before me, saying: ‘If you aim high, you must grow accustomed to the sweat of the climb.’ Every preparation, from the bronze in the Intermediate Biology Olympiad (IBO) to a global gold the following year, from a silver in the British Biology Olympiad (BBO) to a gold in the Australian Science Olympiads (ASOB), was spent in discussion with him during self-study hours and after class.

He showed me that biology is not merely about memorising diagrams, but a philosophy of understanding how complex systems operate. This deep interest in the life sciences also led me to participate in a human factors engineering project at Tsinghua University, moving from the laboratory to real-world research settings and exploring how science intertwines with human behaviour and cognition. But I believe that personal growth must never be confined to a single track.

Stage and Arena:

Growing Through Expression and Collaboration

The Wellington campus itself provided me with a platform to transform my internal interests into outward action. Here, opportunities are not a scarce resource; they exist as naturally as the air we breathe. From top-tier academic competitions to cross-border research projects, from professional performing arts stages to wilderness expeditions, from systems supporting pupil-led initiatives to international volunteering networks, if you are willing to reach out, there is always a light to illuminate your path.

Under the spotlight, I lived another kind of life. Playing Simon Stride in the musical Jekyll & Hyde and Horatio in Shakespeare’s work taught me to express the contradictions of human nature and the essence of loyalty through words and movement. As a bassist in a band, I enjoyed laying the foundation for melodies in low frequencies, creating an instant emotional connection with fellow musicians. These two experiences, one about deep interpretation, the other about real-time collaboration, greatly sharpened my ability to express myself and empathise with others.

Similarly, the debate arena became my battleground of ideas. Serving as the first speaker in COBIS international debates and in-school English debates required me to construct logical frameworks and present them clearly and persuasively quickly. The moment my house won the English debate championship was the best possible recognition of critical thinking and teamwork.

Inquiry and Integration:

Towards an Interdisciplinary Human Science

These experiences may seem scattered, but in my mind they gradually converged around one core question: how do individuals, their psychology and behaviour, interact with groups and the social environment? This question led me to take advantage of online research opportunities and, under the guidance of a psychology professor from the University of Southern California, delve into the biological and psychological mechanisms of addictive behaviour, completing an in-depth study on the mechanisms of gambling addiction. Examining desire and self-control through the lens of neuroscience allowed me, for the first time, to systematically combine the research methods of the natural and social sciences, and it gave me a clear sense of the powerful appeal of interdisciplinary problem-solving.

图片

I have not travelled this path alone. My university counsellor engaged me in several crucial conversations when I was unsure how to bring together my wide-ranging interests. She helped me organise what seemed like a sprawling list of activities, from scientific experiments to psychology research, from theatrical performance to public speaking. She showed me that they all pointed to a deep concern with the concept of the human: human biology, human psychology, human expression in society and culture. She encouraged me to see my instinct to help others, such as three years of academic and emotional support for classmates and initiating the T2T peer mentoring project for new pupils, as both an important ability and a source of responsibility, woven into the story of my exploration.

A Dream Held High:

The Trust and Possibility Behind a Scholarship

On this journey of exploration, I received a transformative gift: a full scholarship from the school. This honour was far more than financial support. It was an immensely precious expression of trust and affirmation. It eased my family’s financial burden, allowing me to focus wholeheartedly on academic study, research and activities without being constrained by practical concerns. For me, this scholarship has been a silent lift, enabling me to jump higher and see further, to grasp the opportunities that truly belong to this fertile ground. It made me deeply aware that this outstanding educational environment not only provides opportunities but also strives to clear the path for promising pupils, making talent itself the only passport.

图片

Now, as I look back on this journey, exploring the mysteries of life in the laboratory, analysing the drivers of behaviour in psychology papers, observing and practising communication and influence on stage and in debates, even contemplating how to improve my surroundings during the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expeditions where I experienced human resilience and the interdependence of a team, all these threads naturally point towards a field of study that can encompass my entire curiosity: Human Science.

图片

Human Science is precisely a discipline that breaks down the barriers between biology, psychology, sociology, public health and even public policy. Its central question is how we understand the human being as a biological individual, a member of society and a product of culture? This is exactly what has been at the heart of my practice and reflection over the past several years. I have studied the brain mechanisms of addiction, and I have experienced how communication can ease peer pressure. I have analysed experimental data and launched school-wide initiatives. I long to continue this exploration within a more integrated and systematic academic framework, hoping one day to contribute to understanding human behaviour and promoting collective well-being.

图片

As I prepare to embark on a new stage, I am filled with gratitude. Looking back from this new starting point, my heart overflows with thanks. I am grateful to Wellington and the expansive educational vision behind it for creating a safe, nurturing and inspiring environment for me. Here, trying is encouraged, failure is embraced, passion is treasured and unique paths are respected. I am especially grateful to my biology teacher, who led me into the palace of life sciences and taught me to hold rigour and curiosity side by side. I am grateful to my university counsellor, who offered a crucial alternative perspective as I wove together the map of my story. I thank all my classmates who have supported me and walked alongside me, and all the teachers who have given me guidance, trust and opportunities.

This fertile soil has nurtured my dreams and given me the wings to pursue them. I am ready, carrying this trust and support, to step into a broader realm of knowledge and continue that great exploration of life, mind and society.
