The Spirit of Sport at Wellington College Tianjin
From Head of PE and Sports
Richard Gater
October is always a busy month in the Wellington College Tianjin sporting calendar. Before the cold snap, pupils across the college have ample opportunity to participate in sport and improve their skills and performance in athletics, volleyball and badminton, to name but a few of the competitions. Alongside the obvious health and physiological benefits that sport provides, it can have a hugely positive impact on both social and mental wellbeing too. Anyone who has ever played for a sports team will know what it means to train alongside teammates, honing your physical and communicative skills, collaborating to solve problems and overcome obstacles, as well as the positive effects of team camaraderie. These benefits are certainly not limited to team sports only; elite individual athletes are well attuned to long periods of extreme concentration and determination, often learning a great deal about resilience and sacrifice very early in life – if you want to know more, just ask some of the elite sportsmen and women who study here at the College! In PE and Sport, we must find a balance between providing pupils with the opportunity to participate and have fun, whilst still giving them the experience of a competitive and challenging environment. For me, interhouse sport provides pupils with this exact opportunity.
In October, pupils, from across the Junior and Senior Schools took part in their annual sports’ day. Throughout Tuesday 13th October, Senior School pupils competed in a range of athletics events, including the javelin, triple jump, high jump and 200m sprints, finishing the day with the 4 x 100m relay races. Two days later was the Junior School’s chance to respond, with a range of field events in the morning, including the shot-put and long-distance races, followed by the sprinting races in the afternoon. Both events were heavily focused around pupils representing their houses and earning points that would go towards the overall house totals, as well as individual awards for high-performing pupils. Congratulations go to the following pupils for earning the most points for their respective houses on the day:

Senior School MVP went to Nicky (year 11) and Aiden (year 11), both from the Orange House. There were more pupils participating in events than have ever participated before, with record numbers of points being scored too. On both days, the Orange house came out as the eventual winners, taking the trophy back to their respective house rooms, where they eagerly await the challenge from the other houses next academic year.
