EPQ Programme Empowers Senior Pupils to Pursue Their Passions

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a research-based qualification that allows pupils to explore a topic of their choice in depth and produce an extended piece of work. EPQ projects can take many forms, including research-based writing, investigations, artefacts, or performances, and is worth the equivalent of half an A-level.
At our school, we are proud of our twelve EPQ pupils who are known for their independence, intellectual curiosity and individuality. Each of them was encouraged to choose a topic that interested and challenged them, to conduct research using a range of sources and methods, and to present their findings and conclusions coherently and convincingly. To celebrate their success and their research projects, we recently held a marketplace and conference that brought together pupils, teachers, and parents. The event showcased a variety of EPQ projects, ranging from business and economics, law and justice, international relations, biology, chemistry, and medicine to mathematics and AI.
The EPQ marketplace and conference was a vibrant and interactive space where pupils displayed their work and engaged with visitors, explaining their research questions, methods, and outcomes. The marketplace was divided into different subject areas, allowing visitors to explore the diversity of EPQ projects and appreciate the depth and breadth of the pupils’ interests and skills. Our pupils also demonstrated how to choose a research question, how to conduct a literature review, how to collect and analyse data, how to communicate findings effectively, how to deal with time management, and how to apply research skills in different contexts.
Our pupils and their presentations highlighted high-quality learning and how that can inspire and empower pupils to pursue their passions and make a positive difference in the school. The skills that have been learned were seen as essential for pupils to succeed in their EPQ projects for higher education and future careers. The EPQ marketplace and conference were a testament to the creativity, dedication, and excellence of our EPQ pupils. They demonstrated the value of research-based learning in fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
In summary, the EPQ programme has given our pupils a special chance to delve into their passions and acquire important abilities. The market and conference highlighted the impressive achievements of our pupils, emphasizing their potential as great learners, future connectors, and unstoppable changemakers. We are proud of our EPQ pupils and look forward to seeing the impact that their projects will have on their future academic and professional pursuits.
