Sailing Trip 2021
29 May - 2 June, 2021 Sailing Trip
On 29th May, 29 young sailors departed from Tianjin for Beidaihe for our 8th Annual Sailing Trip. This is the first residential trip we have been able run since the outbreak of Covid in January 2020, and it was great that so many pupils joined. Also, we were delighted that many Year 6 pupils participated in the trip as it gave them a taste of the independence they are about to embrace as they enter the Senior School.
We were blessed with very good sailing weather for the majority of the trip. The breezes were moderate and increased as the week unfolded, and the choppiness of the sea also became more challenging in the latter stage of the week. This was excellent as it enabled the sailors to learn the basics in calm waters and then exercise their learning in conditions that were more challenging and that naturally enabled stretch. At the end of the week all new sailors were awarded the RYA Level 1 certificate and more experienced sailors were awarded RYA Level 2 and Level 3 certificates.
Sailing is a wonderful sport for it requires discipline, teamwork, leadership and an understanding of nature. These are all skills and qualities that we wish young Wellingtonians to develop and it was evident that all the sailors did so. In addition. Wellington’s Annual Sailing Trip proved yet again to be a superb platform for building lasting friendships.
