Congratulations to our first Shuping Scholars

05 Jan 2021

A year ago, our school held the launch ceremony for the Shuping Scholarship. Wellington College Bilingual Tianjin - A Level Centre, was the first school in the Wellington College China group to launch this prestigious scholarship. After a year of rigorous selection, there are four outstanding pupils receiving this great honour. They are Nelson, Mary, August and Ted; they all truly deserve this award!

   Shuping Scholarship Winners

Nelson: A big thank you to the Shuping Scholarship committee for giving me this special honour. The scholarship has unlocked an infinite number of opportunities for me. I will make sure to honour the principles of being a Shuping scholar and always have gratitude towards Shuping and Wellington.

Mary: I am incredibly honoured to be selected as one of the Shuping scholars and I am grateful to be presented with the opportunity of having an interview with the previous scholars and administrators of the Shuping council. The teachers treated me with great kindness and patience regardless of my continuous failure to get connection with the Internet and showed their unlimited interest in the activities and ideas that I talked about throughout the interview. Undoubtedly, I will treat this as a motivation to put more effort in my future studies as well. I would also like to thank Wellington for providing me with the chance of knowing about - and receiving - the award.

August: I am very grateful to the Shuping Scholarship for giving me this opportunity to support my studies at Wellington College Tianjin. I see it not only as financial support, but also as spiritual encouragement. In the process of interviewing for the scholarship, I learned about the original intention of the scholarship when it was founded. I was inspired by it and saw the very deep bonds of the previous scholars. I hope to maintain this Shuping spirit and this special bond.

Ted: I would like to thank my fellow students and teachers who helped me in the scholarship application process. More than certificates and awards, my real reward is the spirit of "giving back to the community" that I learned from Mr. Gu Qianlin's deeds. I hope to pass on the help I received during this application season to others through the school’s charity walk and other Charity events.

Julian Jeffrey, Master of Wellington College Tianjin commented that “I am so delighted that these four remarkable young students have been recognised through the award of a Shuping Scholarship. The programme is one of the most generous and prestigious academic prizes in China and the entire Wellington College China family of schools joins me in congratulating August, Mary, Nelson and Ted in their achievement. Their outstanding academic potential is allied to a strong sense of responsibility to the community they come from, here in Tianjin. They will be the first of a number of Shuping scholars from across our family of schools to go on to study at the world’s most elite universities, highlighting once more Wellington’s commitment to giving students of all backgrounds the chance to shine in their studies and beyond”. Wellington College Tianjin looks forward to cultivating a group of students with a high degree of talent, global awareness and the confidence in Chinese culture through this scholarship programme in order to continuously carry forward the noble spirit of “what is gained from the society should be returned to the society”.
