Wellington College in Tianjin marked a very Positive Community Week recently. Our creative members of the Student Events Committee arranged activities for Wellingtonians across both Junior and Senior School. Guardian Angel, All My Friends and Scavenger Hunt were just a few examples of how our oldest pupils got involved with their peers in promoting the Wellington values.

Rose from Year 12 was one of the activity coordinators. We asked her what else she thought we could do to improve on our positive community in the future.

Rose said, “I think the first step to becoming a part of a positive community is to make sure that the individual self has a growth mindset with a positive attitude. I believe that the hardest person to influence and change is oneself. Therefore, if one can change oneself to stay positive, work inclusively, and learn tolerance and resilience, one can positively influence others around them. So first, I would make sure that I, myself, have a growth mindset that keeps me going so that I can convince others to become a part of the positive community too.

I would also encourage communication around the community, which I think is key to a positive community. Some people try to hide their feelings in front of others, which may result in hiding their own emotions. Communication brings people a chance to recognize those emotions and let them out. If we could all try to take that first step in trying to open up to a trusted person, we could all collaboratively be a part of the positive community. As I always believe- creating a positive community takes the active mindsets of all the members of the community.”

The final activity for the week was our annual Charity sleepover. Over fifty pupils from across the senior school and three members of staff gave up the comfort of their beds by spending the entire night at school. Our student council members prepared interesting games for their friends, and we all enjoyed the positive atmosphere, healthy competition, and the sense of achievement for supporting such a worthwhile cause.
