We are Wellington From Alumna: Lotus and Ada's University Life

16 May 2018

Lotus

The London School of Economics and Political Science

Until now, I have studied successfully and happily at LSE for around 6 months. The study of Alevel established a good foundation for me to study my course at university. Therefore there was no difficulty for my study at the beginning of the university life. Apart from the study itself, the connection between the high school life and university life in other ways is also prefect. WCIT provided us with the personal study time which made me build up self-study skills. In university, there are only 10-hour lectures and classes time per week, which requires us to do lots of self study. The sixth-form system at WCIT is also same as the sixth-form in the UK. Therefore it reduces the cultural difference and makes me easier to make friends with more international students. Recently I have been elected as the Environment and Ethic officer of the Student Union. The role as the Head of College at WCIT gave me confidence and support though the campaign. I am very glad that I spent three years at wellington. I am also grateful for all the help offered by wellington.

Tips for Y13 graduates
1. Make good balance between social life and study
In university, 3 quarters of time is for self study, which is for us to do some readings and homework. There is only one lecture per week for each module, which means the lecture is very intense. Especially for UK universities, the teachers and lecturers do not know most of the students in the classes and lectures. Therefore, no one actually supervises you and rushes you to finish your homework on time or catch up on all the models. Moreover, there are so many distractions like clubbing, society…….., which take up quite a lot of time. However, these social events are really important for you to get to know people and make friends with them. Making friends is the second most important thing for me( completing the degree is the first haha). Therefore, you need to balance study and social life very well in order to make the perfect use of your time in university.

2. ESPECIALLY FOR ENGLISH AS SECOND LANGUAGE STUDENTS
As you know, English is my second language. Although I passed the IELTS exam for the university, the English that I master is still not professional enough for the study at university. There are lots of readings and essays in university. With relatively poor English, I have to spend more time finishing my reading. Given a fixed time, the essay I wrote is 100 words shorter than the native speakers’ essays. Therefore, in terms of writing essays at universities, I have a natural limitations compared with native speakers. here, I strongly encourage Y12 and Y13 to keep studying English.

3. Make great use of resource in your university
For example, LSE, has many free public lectures. Many celebrities have come to give speeches. 24-hour library, where you can study for your courses and also read the books that you like. Career events and alumni events, which are great for reaching out to people. You can have some ideas about the jobs that you are willing to do. You can also get some internship opportunities from your alumni………..

Highlight of my uni life:
I chose to stay in the most sociable halls with 128 people only in total. (Normally halls have around 800 people) therefore I made friends with almost everyone in my halls. At LSE(we do not have a campus actually), it is hard to make friends with the people in class or lectures. Halls instead, become the place where you make your fiends mostly. In March, I started running for a position in the student union. I had 3 competitors. We need to campaign in order to get the votes from students. Finally I won the election with the highest vote. During my campaign period, all of my friends in my halls were very supportive. They talked to their societies to get the endorsement from them for me. All of these have been done without my request, which was very surprising. I am so glad that I had a great time for my first year.Through this year’s study, I felt that I had a huge improvement in my English. Studying abroad is really helpful for people to learn new languages.

How did Wellington prepare me?

I think that it is needless to say that Wellington is undoubtedly a very inclusive environment, from student and teacher interactions to the diverse cultural backgrounds. Having studied in an environment as such all my life prepared me when studying abroad; it gave me the experience of interacting with people from all over the world. Some people who weren’t as privileged as we are may have the difficulty of making friends outside of their comfort zone, thus creating a cultural divide.

This is definitely a time to experience what the world has to offer because you don’t have rules set by your parents, nor the responsibility of providing for yourself just yet. This is a time for you to decide and find out who are you and whom you want to become in the future. This is the stepping-stone from adolescence to adulthood. However, you now have to be responsible for yourself and your actions as no one will be there to defend and take care of your mistakes. Just remember that your health is the base line of all your actions because you could only do things when you have a healthy body.
