A Cutting Edge Chinese Premiere of 'Ricefall'

On 1st September 2017, sixteen members of Stanley House gave the first performance in China of ‘Ricefall’.
Composed by Michael Pisaro (Co-chair of Experimental Sound Practices and Composition at California Institute of Arts and former Fromm Visiting Professor of Composition at Harvard University), ‘Ricefall’ unlocks an innovative performance practice of dropping rice onto elemental objects, which enabled Stanley’s performers to transform the Black Box Theatre into an evocative, multisensory rainy landscape.
The eighteen minute piece, inspired by the late professor John M Hull’s explanation of why blind people, like himself, enjoy rainy days, also resonated profoundly with two fundamental elements in Chinese culture: rain and rice. The Stanley’s truly remarkable and memorable performance widened our community’s horizons and vision of creativity.
