Anglesey House re-define “RESPECT” and showcase anti-prejudice drama on Senior School Assembly

The Anglesey House ran the first assembly of the year on Sept 12th. They talked about the theme of “Respect” and fighting prejudices. Our KS3 students did an amazing job – they explained what they thought each letter in the word “respect” means to them: R = respect; E = empathy; S = superpowers (because we are all heroes at something!), P = promise (that you will do your best to help others - every single day…); E = emotions; C = cheerful (because we all need to find reasons to be cheerful each day); and T = today (because RESPECT has to start now!).
Then the KS4 and KS5 students worked together presenting dramatic recreation of Jane Elliot’s famous Psychology experiment: ‘Blue eyes – Brown eyes’, where a group of students is divided into ‘brown-eyed’ and ‘blue-eyed’ pupils. In the short drama one group was pretending to bully the other without any reason or provocation– this showed very clearly exactly how abhorrent prejudice and intolerance can be; and that ending discrimination and intolerance is the duty of us all as a school community. Finally, the Anglesey students sent a clear message – be willing to accept the thoughts and feelings of others, especially those that are different from your own!
