A Morning Watching The Changing Of The Guard
The Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace is a typical tourist thing to be doing. The guardsmen are professional infantry soldiers taken from one of 5 regiments who take turns to protect and serve the royal family. When the Queen is in residence, as she was today, there are 3 officers and 40 soldiers on duty. The ceremony involves the old guard standing down from their duties and the new guard beginning theirs.
The marching bands can be heard well before they can be seen and played a mix of tunes – today they played We Are the Champions and Memory, from Cats, amongst others!
The rain just about held off for us as we saw this. With the walk through the park afterwards, we were not quite so lucky and we took refuge for a bit next to a memorial to those who fought and lost their lives in World War II.
