A day at windsor castle
Today was spent at one of the official homes of the Queen, Windsor Castle. This is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world and has been a royal home since 1080. William the Conqueror first established the castle, but at this time, it was a wooden fortress.
We arrived in time to hear, and then see, the marching band of guards making their way out of the castle. Once they had gone, we were able to explore the grounds and various buildings. St. George’s Chapel housed many tombs of kings and queens. We were not allowed to take photos inside this building. Neither could we take photos inside Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, which was a huge dolls’ house with some very detailed pieces of furniture and paintings in.
After this we, made our way around the State Apartments, that was home to hundreds of different pieces of weaponry, paintings and furniture that have belonged to the royal family over the many centuries.
Having spent most of the day wandering around the castle and its’ grounds, we made our way to a park near where the coach was parked so that we could have a run around and a game of football. On the way though, we had to stop at an old-fashioned sweet shop to stock up on sweets!
It was a very enjoyable, but tiring day. Hopefully, tomorrow will be just as good – we are off to see another royal residence, Buckingham Palace and the changing of the guard there, before spending the afternoon at the Science Museum.
