The Highlights of our Inquiry Unit: All Dressed-Up by Milepost 1

13 Jan 2016
The Highlights of our Inquiry Unit: All Dressed-Up From The Opsrey Class: Year 1 Osprey have had great fun during the ‘All Dressed Up’ unit of work. We have learnt about clothes from different cultures and countries as well as clothing that protects us! This is very important, especially when doing dangerous jobs. We have investigated materials and learnt new words such as ‘waterproof’ and ‘insulator’. During the unit, we have loved our Art topics and creating our own Tartan Kilts! This has been great fun and we have learnt so much about the clothes that we and our friends wear! From The Kingfisher Class: The unit ‘All dressed up!” was a fantastic opportunity to spark children’s interest in subjects like science, history and geography as clothing is so tangible to them. The kingfishers loved comparing traditional clothes from different countries, comparing clothes throughout the generations of their families and learning about the different materials. We were even able to link the topic with our literacy unit ‘Labels, lists and captions’. In the included photographs, you can see children labeling and discussing their teacher’s clothes. They really enjoyed this activity. From The Owl Class: In Y2K (Owls), we enjoyed learning about different types of materials and clothes. We know now what ‘fair testing’ is and conducted our own scientific experiments to find out how waterproof different materials are. We have learnt things that we didn’t know before! From The Toucan Class: We have had an exciting unit in The Toucan class, looking at clothes from an international perspective. We have found out a lot of interesting things about outfits; what they are made from; how they are worn and where they come from. We have had a lot of fun weaving; designing and making outfits for our soft toys. We created our own tartan design; investigated how waterproof materials were and looked at clothes worn by parents and grandparents when they were children and comparing them to the clothes we wear today. We also had a closer look at various pieces of clothing from our Adoptive Country – Italy. From The Eagle Class: What a fun unit this has been for The Eagle class. We’ve taken a whole new look at clothes: what they’re made from; where they come from; how they are worn; how they’re different in many parts of the world. For a while, we were fashion designers, making custom outfits for our soft toys. Then, we put on our Science hats and investigated how waterproof and insulating various materials were. We came to some interesting conclusions. We looked at Mum, Dad and our grandparents’ clothes and compared and contrasted them to the clothes we wear today. We even investigated the process, ‘from sheep to sweater’. All-in-all, we truly gained an international perspective with this unit.
