IST 0 - 2 Wellington. 22nd September 2015. Middle School Football
Wellington College put in a very accomplished performance against a spirited and physical IST side. Wellington made amends for a sloppy warm-up by getting an early goal. Elliot Lee and Willy Kim combined well to create a chance for Evan Lee to finish with aplomb. Wellington continued to play positive and attractive football with the defensive unit of Sam, William and Leo always looking for an opportunity to turn defence into attack. Emergency goalkeeper Alejandro played with swagger and thrust and showed that hours spent on the volleyball court have enhanced his range of sporting skills. In the second half Evan added a second after good interplay in midfield. As you would expect from IST they were well organised and never gave up. It was a great contest and a very pleasing result. The middle school team now looks forward to the ISCOT competition on the 10th October. Thanks to IST players and staff and the Wellington coaches who have worked so hard with the players.
Wellington 5 - 2 TEDA. 15th September. Middle School Football
Despite limited time to practise, Wellington gave a good account of themselves against a direct TEDA team. The game was played in excellent spirit, with players trying to play the ball as opposed to clearing it and running to keep the ball in touch instead of playing for throw ins. It is pleasing to see young players play football in the correct fashion. TEDA started strongly and were the first to score. Young Danny in goal had an excellent game, and showed excellent reflexes and nous. It was a remarkable performance for a year 7 in a game saturated with year 9s. As the game wore on, Wellington started to find their stride and scored a deflected goal that Willy Kim tried to claim. Willy's next goal could not be disputed as he scored with his head from a well-worked corner. Evan and SeongBin added further goals before another deflected/Willy effort. It was a good run out for Wellington and was it not for excellent goalkeeping on both sides the result could have looked like a cricket score.
Wellington 2 - 6 TIS. 17th September. Under 13s Football.
Wellington hopefully learned a lot against a skilful and ambitious TIS team. TIS controlled the game well and showed the benefit of moving the ball quickly and the impact that players can have by running off the ball. A handful of players took it to the opposition and seemed to benefit from playing for the under 14s some days earlier. Andy gave a good performance in midfield and Ian Park showed promise. Ryan Lee had a very strong game and was always looking for the ball as an attacking outlet. Kaiser is continuing to develop as a player and I was delighted to see him play with such desire. Leo always showed that he is not just a student of Literature. More than any other player, he understands the importance of keeping the ball and making yourself available when others have it. The TIS team did have a slightly more mature line up but in the end the result was more to do with skill and application instead of physical development. Towards the end Wellington started to threaten more and Harry ended up bagging 2 goals; just rewards for his hard work throughout the game. Wellington shouldn't be too upset by the performance but I would ask that the players come to future games with a more positive approach and look to attack more and keep possession. There was no shortage of effort but there are times when the players would do well to realise that keeping the ball is far more effective and energy efficient than kicking it straight back to the opposition.
TEDA vs Wellington. Under 19s Volleyball. TEDA 3 sets to 1.
The Wellington volleyball team made the long journey to TEDA and played in a good tempered but intense game. With Tony Chen and JaeBin Hwang away the game provided a chance for other players to show their worth. Alejandro Sabio had a good game, and his setting in particular has improved significantly. Peter gave his best performance with thunderous serves and smashes. DaeWon Lee was good in all areas and is looking a very accomplished player. All of the sets were close but TEDA often just edged Wellington on crucial scores. It was pleasing to see Lincoln attack and block with such aggression and he won some crucial points. It was also good to see Miguel get some game time and showcase his range of skills. Wellington won the final set and should be pleased with their attitude and application to volleyball.
