Binhai explosions letter to parents

Dear Parents The tragic events of last week in Binhai have unsurprisingly dominated the headlines both in China and across the world, and whilst the situation has stabilised, there remains considerable uncertainty about the consequences for the area in the aftermath of the explosions. I am acutely aware of the concerns and sensitivities that surround the incident, and I have no doubt that you, as parents, feel understandably anxious about the next few days and weeks. I would therefore like to outline what the school has done to gather accurate information and the steps we have taken to protect our pupils, colleagues, parents and friends. International SOS has also produced a short advisory document outlining the potential consequences of the explosions and I attach copies of this to the email, with Mandarin and Korean translations. Air Quality The school has a sophisticated air filtration system and we monitor air quality every day. There has been no increase in the level of pollutants – beyond the norms for Tianjin -­‐ measured by the machines in recent days, and we do not expect to see this situation change over the coming days. All the latest advice we have, from the UK Foreign Office, US State Department, Australian and Canadian embassies, is that the prospect of pollution or chemical fallout from the Binhai incident reaching over 50 kms to the school is exceedingly unlikely, given the length of time that has passed since the blasts and the prevailing wind direction. We will, of course, keep a close eye on the air quality over the coming days, and should it reach higher than expected levels, we will review our outdoor play arrangements in line with other ISCOT schools once school opens on 31st August. Water Supply There are widely reported fears of Sodium Cyanide contamination potentially reaching the water supply. Whilst all the latest reports we have from local authorities and Greenpeace suggest this is increasingly unlikely, we have asked our suppliers of water to the school, Nestle, for a company statement. I have attached it to this letter. Food  Contamination Similar concerns have been reported about the potential for on-­‐going contamination of the food supplies in the region. You will already be aware that Sodexo, our school caterers, provide pollution-­‐free organic food for all meals here and they have produced the following statement in response to our requests for information. This is also attached. All the indications we have, from the most reliable and trustworthy sources, is that life in the city of Tianjin itself is not affected, and you will certainly find that that here at Wellington it is very much ‘business as usual’. At the same time, my overall message is one of reassurance, but certainly not of complacency. We continue to monitor all these areas every day, and if the situation were to change significantly, I will of course update you all with a message as soon as I can. The reporting on social media and, in some cases, major news corporations, has been alarmist and has often failed to take into account the sheer size of the Binhai/TEDA/Tianjin region. Those closest to the area of the explosions, which took place some 50km from the school, are of course uppermost in our concerns at this time. The tragic loss of life and devastating range of injuries amongst the inhabitants of Binhai and TEDA has been awful. In collaboration with our friends in ISCOT, TIS and IST, we are initiating an emergency collection for those most badly affected by the Binhai explosions. We are looking to provide the following: blankets and pillows; toys for children; insect repellant; and summer clothing. If you would like to donate to this cause, please deliver the goods to our Security Gate and we will deliver them over the weekend to Binhai for dispersion. 학부모님들께 지난 주 빈하이에 발생한 비극적인 사고는 중국과 전 세계의  주요한  기사가  되고  있음이  놀랍지  않습니다. 그리고 사고의 상황들이 수습되어 가는 중에 있지만, 폭발 지역에 남겨진 폭발의 여파를 비롯하여 신중해야 할 여러 가지 불확실 한 것들이 남겨져 있습니다. 저는 사고를 둘러싼 우려와  염려에  대해  정확하게  인식하고 있으며, 학부모님들께서 며칠 후나 몇 주 후에 대해 걱정하고 계신다는 것을 공감하고 있습니다. 저는 이 기회를 저희 학교가 정확한 정보와 방안을 수집하여 계획을 세우는 기회로 활용하려고 합니다. 그러므로 우리의 학생들, 동료 교사 및 직원들과 학부모님들을 사고의 추가적인 오염으로부터 보호하기 위함 입니다. 국제 구호팀(International SOS)은 폭발사고의 위험 가능성에 대한 간략한 지침을 작성해 주었습니다. 그리고 저는 이 이메일에 중국어와 한국어 번역을 첨부해 드립니다. 공기 청정도 학교는 공기 정화 시스템을 세심하게 점검하고 매일 교내의 공기의 질을 측정할 것 입니다. 최근 며칠 이내에 기계에 의해 측정된 바로는 천진에 더 이상의 공기 오염의 증가는 없다고 합니다. 우리는 계속 앞으로 며칠 동안도 변화가 있을 것이라고 기대하지 않습니다. 영국의 외무부, 미국과 호주 및 캐나다 대사관을 통해 받은 최근의 지침은 빈하이 사고 지역에서 50 킬로미터 내 학교에서는, 폭발과 바람의 방향 등의 시간이 지남에 따라 오염과 화학적인 방사능을 예상하는 것은 굉장히 보기 드문 것이라는 것입니다. 우리는 물론 추후 며칠 동안 공기의 청정도를 염려해 주의 할 것이고, 예상 보다 공기의 상태가 좋아질 때 우리는 다른 ISCOT 학교들과 함께 외부에서의 활동에 대해 고려해 볼 것이고 학교는 일단 8 월 31 일에 시작합니다. 물 공급 물 공금에 있어서, 시안화 나트륨(청산소다)에 오염 가능성에 대한 공포가 다양하게 보고 되고 있습니다. 최근 지역 당국과 그린피스로 부터 보고된 것은 오염에 대한 가능성은 없을 것이며, 학교에 물 공급 업체인 네슬레에게 회사성명서를 요청하였습니다. 이 편지에 함께 첨부합니다. 식 품 오염 그 지역에 식품의 오염 가능성에 대한 비슷한 염려가 계속 보고 되고 있습니다. 이미 알고 계시듯이, 저희학교 음식을 담당하고 있는 소덱소는 모든 식사재료는 오염되지 않고, 유기농 재료를 사용합니다. 그리고 소덱소는 저희가 요청한 정보에 대한 안내문을 제출하였습니다. 마찬가지로 여기 첨부되었습니다. 그러므로, 저의 메세지는 현재상황이 만족스럽지는 않지만, 여러분을 안심시키기 위한 한가지 입니다. 저희는 매일 이지역에 대한 관찰을 계속할 것입니다. 그리고 만약 상황에 중요한 변화가 생긴다면, 가능한 빨리 최근 소식을 알리도록 할 것입니다. 어떤 경우에 대해서는, 소셜 미디어 그리고 중요 방송사들은 불필요한 사항들을 보고하지만, 빈하이/테다/천진지역 상황은 고려하지 않는 경우도 있습니다. 폭발사고의 중심 근접 지역은 지금 저희 마음 속에 가장 안타까운 곳입니다. 빈하이와 테다지역 주민들은 지금 비극으로 인해 삶을 잃고, 많은 피해를 입었으며, 삶의 심각한 상황에 직면하였습니다. 저희가 가진 모든 정보는, 믿을수 있고 신뢰할 수 있으며, 이 폭발 사고로 천진지역 삶에는 영향을 미치지 않는다고 합니다. 그리고 여기 ‘웰링턴은 평상시와 다름 없다’는 것을 확인하실 수 있을 것입니다.
