Mr Turner waves good bye to Tianjin with 2 winner’s cups and 1 runner up.

IST hosted a great ISCOT football event for the students in the Junior School. Wellington took 7 teams down, all with high hopes of fun and success.
Mr Williams took one of the year 3 and 4 teams. After a shaky start to the tournament the team soon gelled well as a team, with some excellent saves by Eli in goal. There were some well-coordinated attacks between Leo and Karim. With excellent defending from Riordan, Jack and Mike. The boys finished 3rd in the round robin but won the semi-final to take them through to the final where they went 1-0 up and held that for most of the game. With 4 minutes to go it went to 1-1 and then to penalties where Leo, Jack and Karim took on the pressure and unfortunately we walked away with 2nd place after a valiant effort by all. A great achievement by a new team.
In the year 5 and 6 competition, the side did not come away with what they hoped for despite playing some excellent football. The team played 4, won 1, drew 1 and lost 2 meaning that they finished a very close competition in 4th place. The highlight of the day was the excellent win over TEDA and draw against a very strong TIS team with Andy scoring a wonderful goal!
After the game departing head Coach Mr. Turner had this to say "The players have worked hard over the year and the standard of football has definitely improved within the year group, but some silly mistakes and bad luck on the day meant that it just wasn’t to be! As their coach I must say that it has been a pleasure watching these boys progress over my two years at Wellington and I am sure they have a bright future ahead of them."
The girls went to the competition as the current ISCOT champions. Despite the favourites tag they proved why they are a special bunch with another Championship winning performance. All of the girls played well with Nicole and Sayali scoring vital goals. Lizzie had an excellent afternoon in goal and made some vital saves to ensure the girls won the competition. Ms Wei should be immensely proud of the success this team has enjoyed.
The other year 3-4 had a roller coaster of an afternoon, beating IST on penalties in the final to secure a first place finish. It was a great triumph in the face of adversity as the squad nearly lost to TEDA in the finals. Kai Yi had a terrific afternoon in goal saving a number of penalties. Graham, Joseph, Aleksander and Jason also performed very well and kept things tight at the back. Stanley worked hard throughout and scored some vital goals. Fraser had a successful afternoon but at the other end of the pitch to his sister, he scored a number of crucial goals and also created many for the team.. It was a great team performance and I hope this squad of players will continue to work hard and enjoy the sport.
Many thanks, as always, to IST for hosting such a fine event. Thanks to Ms. Wei, Mr. Maliphant, Mr. Moran, Mr. Williams and Mr. Burnett for taking the sides and investing so much effort and time into the students.
A huge thank you to Mr. Turner for all the hard work he has put into coaching the football sides at Wellington in the last 2 years. His presence, enthusiasm and knowledge of the sport will be sorely missed by all of the students and the PE staff. The success the football sides have enjoyed in recent years is a testament to his hard work. We all wish him and Mrs. Turner all the best for the future in their new adventure at Eagle House in England.
