ISCOT sports: Ultimate Frisbee Competition
13 Jan 2016
Taking part in a range of different sports is so important for developing athletic skills. IST took the innovative step of hosting an Ultimate Frisbee competition, the first time it has been tried, and it was very pleasing to see some new students representing Wellington College at a new ISCOT sport. Numbers at practice were very good, and under the watchful eye of coach's Williams, Gilmore and Service the players quickly learnt the unique skills of Frisbee. As the game is zero contact and self referred it removes the fear factor from sport and also encourages fair play amongst students. The sport itself it very physically demanding, and tossing a Frisbee is a skill that takes some practice. It was no surprise to see students like Evan, Sam, Harold, DaiWon and Daniel pick up the skills with such speed. Many of the scoring principles are similar to other invasion games and lots of the students who play football, basketball or volleyball were able to transfer certain skills.
During the tournament Wellington competed against TEDA and IST and performed very well throughout. Eliot had an excellent afternoon and played very well in a strong team. Bill worked well for the seniors and for the staff side Mr McKinnon demonstrated the skills that propelled him to the top of the Tianjin Frisbee circuit in his younger days.
It was great to be a part of such a fun afternoon, and we hope it has whetted the appetite for some students to keep participating in school sport.
Thanks as always to IST for hosting a great event. A big thank you to Mr Williams as head coach. His organisation and vision was crucial. Thanks as well to Mr Service and Mr Gilmore.
