Year 6 UK Trip - changing of the guard and a play in the park
Today was a lighter day than previous days. It all began with a bit of a bus ride around the fairly empty streets of London pointing out different landmarks. This impromptu bus tour was a result of us arriving an hour earlier than expected for the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace because the journey in to the city had no hold ups!
Whilst we were passing Trafalgar Square, we spotted another Shaun the Sheep. This one was dressed as Nelson complete with hat, eye patch and pigeon! We spotted another one in Leicester Square that was on the theme of The Gruffalo.
We found a fairly good spot to stand in to see the guards marching down The Mall towards the Palace. The sound of the drums and trombones could be heard well before any guards were seen, but then they all came in to view. They march in to the Palace grounds and the ceremony of handing of their duties begins.
Pushing through the crowds of fellow tourists, we made our way to Green Park for lunch and a play. Armed with a couple of Frisbees and a tennis ball (no football in sight!), the children had an hour of running off their energy before heading to Wellington Arch and Apsley House.
Apsley House was the residence of the first Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley. It was originally built in the 1770’s, but the Duke bought it in 1817.
Some of the rooms were amazing with the décor. The striped room was decked top to bottom with red and white striped wall paper and curtains. Even the chairs were upholstered in red and white stripes!
After our trip to the house, we went for another run around; this time in Hyde Park, London’s largest green space. Ball games were played and ice-creams were consumed (even though it was trying to rain)
A more relaxed day than previous days, but tomorrow is going to be a full-on, busy, exciting day – Legoland!
