High School ISCOT Football Competition
Wellington took a depleted but talented squad of players to the ISCOT competition at IST. A number of the starting team were absent due to academic commitments, but it is a credit to the students that Wellington still fielded a competitive group of players. Wellington drew the first game 1 – 1 with TEDA. Cheol Min scored the equalizing goal. The game went to penalties to decide the outcome. Unfortunately luck was not on Wellingtons side during the shoot out and TEDA won 3-2. The next game was immediately after against IST. With 1 hour of football already played a number of players took to the field already fatigued. Wellington made a fantastic start with James Burnett grabbing a brace of goals inside 15 minutes. IST’s quality started to show and the Wellington players were starting to feel the effects of so much football and sun. Eventually IST pulled away to win 4-2. The final game was against the eventual winners TIS. Wellington battled throughout this game and it took all of TIS’s 24 player squad to finally break the deadlock and win the game 1 – 0.
Results wise it was not Wellington best showing, but in terms of spirit and attitude it was a testament to the players who played on the Saturday. Many played out of position, some played above their age group and a handful made their debute or came out of retirement (SangBae) to help the team.
