High School Boys Basketball Results             8th December 2014

IST 41 – 43 Wellington

Wellington put in a very encouraging performance away at International School of Tianjin. The team has really improved this year and is really starting to work for each other in attack and defence. It was a tight and tense game throughout with both teams taking it in turns to hold the lead. With regular starting players Bill, Jing, Will and Tony absent the game provided an opportunity for other players to get game time and stake a claim for a starting place. James continued to impress and showed a lot more discipline in defence. Willy and Lucas also had good games and showed promising signs of improvement.  IST are always a strong and well drilled team and it is credit to Wellington that they had the mental strength to win the game. John Yu had a very good game and has added a new dimension to his game. He is much more assertive in defence and he is regularly creating scoring opportunities for others. Jason Jin and Jason Liu were both very effective had managed to play with purpose and control. John Zhang and Derrick impressed and scored important points in the closing minutes.
The players should be very proud of their performance.

High School Girls Basketball Results

IST 31 – 13 Wellington

The girls High School team put in a spirited performance against a very strong and athletic IST team. In the first quarter Wellington gave away too many easy points, and they faced an uphill battle to make it up in the rest of the game. Once Wellington reverted back to simple passing and good rebounding they started to perform better and pushed IST in the final quarters. Yuna had another strong game and has added some new dimensions to her game. Chelsea Archer worked hard and had a good third quarter setting up a good score for Charlotte. Billie Archer was very prominent in the last quarter and scored a brace of lay ups. All of the girls should be very proud of the way they played. For a new team they are doing very well against strong opposition.

Wellington 48 - 51 TIS

The team put up a gallant performance from the first to the final whistle. It was a very close game from start to finish with only a few points in it all game and the team showed what can be achieved with some great teamwork. However, the final score was more down to some individual plays by TIS players. There were great performances from John Yu, John Zhang and the athletic Bill. Other notable mentions for Will, Lucas, Tony, Jason, James, Rex and Willy. A special guest performance was Jin for a great rebounding effect in the first quarter. Had he been available all game then a close game may have gone Wellington’s way.

Top scores

John 22 points
Bill 9 points

High School Girls Basketball                 10th December 2014

TIS 50 – 15 Wellington

ISCOT Girls champions TIS demonstrated why they are considered such a strong school side. The Wellington players, as they always do, played very well and it will be interesting to see how they improve next year. Basketball is a new sport for many of them and a number of the students are playing above their age range. The first quarter didn’t go too well for Wellington. TIS scored a number of slick breakaway points and Wellington were finding it hard to get in the TIS key. In the latter quarters Wellington picked it up with all of the players putting in strong and improved performances. Charlotte had an outstanding game and is starting to recognize her potential. In time she will be an impressive player.  Her physicality and attacking mindset affords the team a number of interesting outlets. MeiWen and Winnie also had good games and it is very pleasing to see these new students putting so much into Wellington sport. They have worked very hard at improving. The exciting factor is that many of the players are eligible for Middle School basketball next season. Subin, Ally, Katie and Jane are all playing against older girls and they do not look intimidated. The attitude of the students is quite remarkable and they are a shining example of the Wellington motto, “ Fortune favours the brave”. One player who will not be playing in the middle school team is Yuna. Against a team of excellent players Yuna continues to stand out, and against TIS she scored a number of shots under the post. It is clear she is respected by the opposition as she was closely marked all game. Many thanks to TIS for a great game and we look forward to playing them again soon.
