Wellington holds Tianjin’s First International Higher Education Fair
With looming deadlines for the submission of university applications fast approaching, Wellington College International Tianjin held Tianjin’s First International Higher Education Fair on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th October 2014, both at the College itself and the St. Regis Hotel Tianjin.
The fair was attended by over fifteen leading international universities, including the University of Warwick (UK), the University of Melbourne (Aus), the University of the Arts London (UK), and Nankai University (China), among other institutions. Further to the general exhibition, students and parents were able to attend specially-prepared seminars that aimed to provide not only assistance in the selection of the right university or course, but more importantly guidance as to application procedures for different degrees or countries. To give a number of examples, one such seminar was presented by a representative of St. George’s University, London, who spoke in detail about the procedure for applying for Medical Degrees in the UK, whereas other topics concentrated on scholarships and foundation degrees (University of Kent, UK), your options in choosing your degree (Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, China) and the differences between campus and collegiate universities (University of Warwick, UK), to name but a few.
The intention of the event was to provide students and parents of the Tianjin community – both local and international, with a platform from which they might consult official representatives of different universities. By enhancing understanding of options available to an individual who is deciding where and what he or she might study, the aspiration of the Careers Department of Wellington Tianjin is simply to ensure that students fully comprehend both the various simplicities and ultimate intricacies involved in an often misunderstood process, further to offering guidance and advice to universities in the delivery of relevant and contextual information to students of all backgrounds.
In addition to organising the fair, Wellington Tianjin has received visits from a wide range of top universities this term – Edinburgh University (UK), UBC (Canada), the University of Nottingham (UK), Rutgers (US), with further visits from the University of St. Andrews (UK), SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) London (UK) and the New College of the Humanities (UK) scheduled for the remainder of the term. With events planned for Korean and Australian universities next term, the future is looking bright for students at Wellington Tianjin.
Organised entirely by the Wellington College Careers Department, the event was supported by the British Chamber of Commerce and the CBBC, the European Chamber, AmCham Tianjin, AustCham Beijing, and was officially sponsored by Indier Outdoor Education, and Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. The event was a free event that will become an annual fixture in the school’s calendar, to which all are welcome to attend.
