Y11 Chinese Culture Trip to Yangliuqing

08 Jan 2016

In order to arouse students’ interest of exploring the richness of traditional Chinese culture, the Mandarin Department organized a trip for pupils in Year 11 learning Mandarin to visit Yangliuqing Museum on October 29th.

Yangliuqing Museum, also known as the Residence of The Shi Family, is the former residence of Shi Yuanshi, the 4th son of Shi Wancheng, one of the eight great masters in Tianjin. Now it serves as the folk custom museum, which has a large collection of folk art pieces like Yangliuqing New Year pictures and brick sculpture. Yangliuqing New Year Picture is one of the three famous New Year Pictures in China, which first appeared in Yangliuqing Town in 17th century.

The tour benefitted our pupils by bringing them into closer contact with the Chinese traditional culture, and helped further enhance their appreciation of art and knowledge of history. Pupils had a look at how a noble family lived, and saw the change of Tianjin through the family, seeing the stories behind the New Year Pictures. The pupils also had a chance to try their hand at the five steps in making a New Year Picture, after being shown how by the workshop master.
