Wellington remembers – Jimmy Higham
Jimmy arrived at Wellington UK as a post-graduate PE assistant in 2008 – a funny, kind, hard-working and thoroughly decent young man. Universally liked by staff and pupils, his wry humour and energy made a real mark on the Wellington community.
In late 2010 he was diagnosed with cancer, and just before Christmas 2011, he died.
He was 26 years old.
Well before he knew he had cancer, Jimmy recorded a cover version of Stevie Wonder’s hit song “Isn’t She Lovely”, with friend and Wellington UK colleague, John Walmsley, in the school’s own recording studio. This track has now been unearthed, released on iTunes, and is storming up the chart. We want to do all we can to ensure that it is Number 1 for Christmas, so please do get to iTunes and download it.
The following is from the Wellington UK website:
“As we near the first anniversary of Jimmy’s passing, we have been totally amazed and delighted to see the astronomic ascent up the charts of the song he recorded a few months before he died. This beautiful version of a beautiful song reflects precisely the courage, optimism, joie de vivre and plain determination of the young man from Lancashire whom we all admired. Please do download it – all proceeds from the profit of the song will go to support the Jimmy Higham Bursary Fund – set up to allow us to offer a 50% bursary every two years to boys like Jimmy.”
