Wellington College Korean Mornings

Dear Parents,

It was really good to see you at the Open Day a fortnight ago. There was a great turn-out and I very much hope you were impressed by everything you saw and heard. I have no doubt that the Junior School, in the highly capable hands of Mr John Zermani, and the Senior School, under the guidance of Mr Murray Fowler, my deputy head, and myself, are going to be great successes from August. I am aware that you might have found some of the presentations, all in English, a little difficult to understand. Therefore I am inviting you to a Korean morning at the College at 10.30am, Thursday, 24th February and Friday, 25th February. There will be an experienced Korean translator present, who will make communications for you, and indeed for me, a great deal easier. Perhaps most important of all, this will give you the chance to sit down with a member of the Wellington team and discuss the academic needs of your own child(ren). I strongly believe that a significant Korean group amongst a truly international school environment will be to the great advantage of the individual students as well as the College. In my long experience of Korean students, they bring excellent and enviable work and study skills to their education. I also want to inform you of other developments at the College, which you might not be aware of. Due to demand, we have taken the decision to open all year groups, at both primary and secondary level, from August 2011. Students will therefore be able to study for A-levels and IGCSE from the first academic year. The College retains the goal of becoming an IB World School from August 2013 and, from then, offering the Diploma Programme at Years 12 and 13, as is the case at Wellington College in the UK. The governors have also given us the go-ahead to introduce boarding at the College, bringing us fully into line with Wellington College in the UK. If you have any friends, perhaps living further away from Tianjin, who would be interested in our boarding programme, please ask them to contact Emma Shi as above.

Next month a team from Wellington College in the UK, led by Dr Anthony Seldon, will be visiting Tianjin and, hopefully meeting many of you on Tuesday, 22nd February, at a special occasion to mark the introduction of the College Scholarship programme. I will be posting further details of the programme on the College website in the next few days, but I probably do not need to emphasise to you how important scholarships are in the development of the College, alongside such unique initiatives as the English Academy, the College House system and, central to everything, the Eight Aptitudes model of education.    

For you information, and for any friends you know, who might be interested, our next Open Day is on Saturday, 26th February. There will be two sessions, at 10.30am and 2.00pm. I will be joined again by Mr Murray Fowler and Mr John Zermani, in addition to a couple of the teachers appointed for next year. If you or your friends would like to attend the February Open Day, I would advise booking early with Emma Shi as above.

2주전 학교 공식 공개 일에 뵙게 되어서 매우 반가웠습니다. 많은 분들이 참석을 해 주셨고 여러분들이 보고 들은 모든 것이 좋은 인상으로 남아있기를 바랍니다. 저는 탁월한 능력을 소유한 존 제르마니씨가 이끌게 될 주니어 스쿨과 부교장 머레이 포울러씨와 제가 지도하는 시니어 스쿨 모두 8월부터 성황리에 시작되리라 확신합니다. 여러분들이 영어로 진행되는 학교에 대한 소개가 이해하기 어려우시리라 생각됩니다. 그래서 저는 2월 24일 목요일 25일 금요일 오전 10시 30분에 진행될 “한국어 모임“에 여러분들을 초대하고자 합니다. 그 자리에는 한국인 통역사가 저와 여러분들의 의사소통을 돕게 될 것입니다. 무엇보다도 이 자리는 여러분이 웰링턴 학교의 교사진과 함께 여러분 자녀들의 학습적인 측면에 대한 의견 교환의 자리가 될 것입니다. 저는 진정한 국제 학교의 환경에서 공부하는 한국인 학생들이 학교뿐 만 아니라 개개인 학생들에게도 큰 이점을 가져다 줄 것이라고 믿습니다. 한국 학생들을 오랫동안 접했던 제 경험에 비추어 볼 때 한국 학생들은 학업 면에서 부러움을 살만큼 뛰어난 학습과 학습방법을 자랑하고 있습니다. 한국어 모임에 참석을 원하시는 분은 제 비서인 엠마 슬에게 연락을 주십시요 (전화: 18722487836 혹은 emma.shi@wellingtoncollegeintl.cn). 이날 여러분들을 뵙게 되기를 바라겠습니다.

여러분이 알지 못하는 학교의 다른 진전 상항에 대해서도 안내의 말씀을 드리고자 합니다. 많은 요청에 의하여 저희는 초등학교 및 중, 고등학교 모든 학년을 대상으로 2011년 8월부터 개교하기로 결정했습니다. 그러므로 학생들은 첫 학기부터 IGCSE와 A-level을 공부할 수 있게 되었습니다. 또한 저희는 여전히 2013년 8월을 기점으로 IB World School이 될 것을 목표로 삼고 있습니다. 그때부터는 영국에 있는 웰링턴 학교와 동일하게 디플로마 프로그램을 진행하게 됩니다. 교육부로부터 영국 웰링턴 학교와 마찬가지로 보딩 스쿨로 승인을 받게 되었습니다. 천진에서 멀리 떨어져 있지만 우리학교 보딩 프로그램에 관심이 있는 친구들이 있다면 엠마 슬에게 연락을 주십시요.

다음 달 영국 웰링톤 학교소속 안토니 셀돈씨를 대표로하는 파견단이 천진을 방문할 예정이며, 2월 22일 화요일에 여러분들을 만나 볼 기회가 있으면 좋겠습니다. 그때 학교 장학금 제도에 대한 소개가 있을 것입니다. 며칠 후에 학교 홈페이지에 자세한 내용을 업데이트 하겠지만 장학금 제도, 또한 잉글리쉬 아카데미, 컬리지 하우스 시스템, 그리고 무엇보다 8종 적성 교육 모형등과 같은 독특한 구상들이 학교 발전에 얼마나 중요한지는 제가 새삼 강조하지 않아도 익히 잘 아시리라 생각합니다.

관심이 있으신 여러분이나 혹은 여러분의 친구분들은 2월 26일 토요일이 학교 공개일이니 참석바랍니다. 10시 30분에 한 차례, 2시에 다시 한 차례 모임을 갖도록 하겠습니다. 저 이외에 다음 학기에 새로 임명되는 선생님들과 더불어 머레이 플로러와 존 제르미씨가 참석할 겁니다. 여러분과 여러분의 친구분들이 2월에 있을 학교 공개일에 참석하고 싶으시면 엠마 슬께 미리 예약을 하시기 바랍니다. 감사합니다.
