Top Gold in the UKMT Team Maths Challenge
In the 2025 UKMT Team Maths Challenge, our pupils delivered an outstanding performance. In the Elementary category, Boran, Seojin, Lily and Miranda showcased remarkable teamwork and strong mathematical ability, securing the Top Gold award in all five events. With the highest overall team score in their category, they have qualified for the Global Finals in Manchester, UK.

Meanwhile, our senior school teams also performed brilliantly. Divided into two groups, five of the pupils were from Year 9, making them the youngest participants in the Senior category, yet they rose to the challenge with courage. Team 1 (Peter, Amber, Ricky, Roger) achieved two Top Gold awards, one Gold, one Silver, and third place in the poster round, earning the Team Gold Award and likewise securing a place in the Global Finals. Team 2 (Sophire, Pu, Duncan, Yannis) maintained a steady and consistent performance across all rounds, ultimately winning the Team Bronze Award.

The UKMT Team Maths Challenge, organised by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust, brings together participants from over 80 regions. The contest features distinctive, engaging team-based problem-solving formats that encourage pupils to collaborate, explore mathematical concepts from different angles, and develop their reasoning skills.
This year’s challenge comprised five sections: “Crossnumber”, “Team Round”, “Shuttle”, “Poster Challenge” and “Relay Round”.These tested competitors’ logical thinking, problem-solving skills and teamwork in a comprehensive and demanding way. Our four pupils remained calm under pressure and worked in perfect harmony, displaying mathematical maturity far beyond their years. Their success in this high-level, highly challenging international event is a testament to our school’s excellence in mathematics education and holistic development.

Teacher’s Sharing:
Witnessing Growth, Pride and Inspiration
Jessie, Maths Lead and the team’s mentor, shared her thoughts after the competition:
“As their teacher, watching our Wellington maths team return with Top Gold in all five rounds and first place overall fills me with immense pride. This year’s challenge broke age boundaries by including Elementary teams for the first time, yet the depth and time pressure of the tasks posed a completely new challenge for the pupils.
Despite facing questions based largely on secondary-level mathematics, the children demonstrated not only a strong foundation of knowledge but also the ability to integrate and apply that knowledge flexibly in unfamiliar contexts.”

Dr Wu, Mathematics Teacher, shared with us:
“As an invigilator, I witnessed pupils’ hard work throughout the competition. I can feel the tension during each round as well as the power of teamwork. I highly recommend pupils to participate in such competitions, which extend beyond textbook knowledge, nurturing critical skills like collaboration, communication, logical reasoning, and decisive thinking.”

Pupil Voices:
Finding Joy in Mathematics and Teamwork
Boran reflected on the collaborative experience:
“In the two days of competition, we did many different tasks. Our team overcame many challenges together, and we finally took first place. I am delighted to get this award.”
Peter, captain of Team 1, shared:
“The UKMT Team Maths Challenge is quite different from other maths competitions—it’s all about teamwork. At first, it was pretty challenging, but in the end, it was really rewarding. We improved at solving problems together, grew closer as a team, and realised just how important teamwork and friendship are.”

We warmly congratulate our winning pupils and extend our sincere thanks to their teacher for her dedication and to the parents for their unwavering support. May our pupils continue to nurture their love of mathematics and their spirit of discovery, shining brightly on every stage in life!
