Book Donation to Guizhou School

21 Nov 2025

On 15 November, Dr Yang Yang, Master of Wellington College Education (China) - Tianjin, attended the launch of The Blue Zheluo River at Neishan Bookstore, alongside pupil and staff representatives from the college. They also participated in a meaningful book donation ceremony.

The Blue Zheluo River is the debut children's literary work by Mr Lao Teng, a member of the praesidium of the Chinese Writers Association. Set along the Zheluo River in HeilongjiangProvince the book narrates a poignant tale of nature conservation, the bond between a grandfather and his grandson, and the choices one makes as a child.

A significant part of the event saw the school community spontaneously donate 2,400+ carefully selected children's books to a primary school situated in the mountainous region of Tongren City, Guizhou. The collection encompasses a diverse array of high-quality children's literature, meticulously selected to broaden pupils' reading horizons.

In her heartfelt speech, Dr Yang expressed, "We are deeply grateful to Neishan Bookstore and New Buds Publishing House for inviting us to be part of such a meaningful event. We seized this opportunity to formally present the 2,400+ books contributed by our entire school community to Mr Tian Renbing, the representative of Tongren City, allowing the Wellington community to witness this heartwarming moment together. We extend our special thanks to Mr Lao Teng for generously donating copies of his new book to both schools, enabling our pupils to embrace the spirit of 'diving into the deep blue and feeling as free as a fish' through The Blue Zheluo River."

Mr Tian Renbing, representative of the Beijing Office of Tongren City, Guizhou Province, accepted the donated books on stage and expressed his sincere gratitude for Wellington's pupils' and staff's charitable act.

Online Connection, Lasting Kindness

This Monday, a book donation ceremony took place in a special senior school assembly, simultaneously via video link with Xinchang Primary School in Yinjiang County, Guizhou. Teachers and pupils from both schools appeared on screen, bridging the geographical divide. Pupil representatives from Wellington shared the sentiments and intentions behind the donation, while pupils from Xinchang Primary conveyed their joy and appreciation for receiving the books. Smiles and applause were exchanged across the screen; despite being thousands of miles apart, the two schools were united through books and kindness.

Notably, a Wellington pupil inscribed the following message in one of the donated books: "The power of a book is hidden in every time you open it." This heartfelt sentiment perfectly encapsulates the essence of this donation initiative.

This initiative transcended books; it was a manifestation of our educational philosophy and humanistic values. We remain steadfast in our commitment to nurturing pupils with both a sense of social responsibility and an international mindset. This charity endeavour, jointly initiated by our pupils and staff, serves as a vivid reflection of our holistic education.

May each donated book flow like a clear stream into the childhoods of these distant children, nourishing their hearts and enlightening their minds.
