Developing Independence over the Holidays

Here are some practical and enjoyable ways parents can encourage independence during the summer break:
01
Encourage Self-Help Skills

Children thrive when they can do things on their own. Simple daily tasks can boost their confidence and autonomy.
Dressing Themselves: Let them pick their clothes (offer two choices if needed) and practice putting them on.
Packing Their Bag: Whether it’s for a day out or a picnic, have them help pack their water bottle, hat, and snacks.
Mealtime Independence: Show them where they can get the utensils, and then set up enough spoons, forks or chopsticks for everyone. Teach them to pour their own drink, and clean their plate after eating.
02
Assign Simple Responsibilities

Giving children small chores helps them feel capable and valued.
Watering Plants: A great way to teach responsibility for living things.
Setting the Table: They can place napkins, spoons, or cups.
Tidying Up Toys: Make it a game—set a timer and see how quickly they can put toys away.

03
Promote Decision-Making

Allow children to make age-appropriate choices to build critical thinking.
"Would you like an apple or a banana for a snack?"
"Should we go to the park or the beach today?" (Within reasonable options)
Let Them Choose Books: Encourage them to pick their bedtime story.
04
Encourage Problem-Solving

Instead of solving every problem for them, guide them to think independently.
"What do you think we should do?" (If they’re stuck on a puzzle or task)
"How can we fix this?" (If a toy breaks or spills happen)
Natural Consequences: If they forget their hat on a sunny day, let them experience mild discomfort (safely) to learn responsibility.

05
Foster Social Independence

Summer is a great time for children to practice interacting with others.
Playdates: Let them take turns deciding games or sharing toys.
Ordering Their Own Food: At a café, encourage them to say, "I would like juice, please."
Greetings & Manners: Remind them to say "hello" "thank you" and "goodbye" independently.
06
Explore the Outdoors Independently

Supervised freedom in nature builds confidence and curiosity.
Let Them Lead the Walk: Allow them to choose the path (within safe boundaries).
Scavenger Hunts: Give them a list of items to find (a red leaf, a smooth rock).
Play Unstructured Games: Instead of directing play, let them invent their own games.

07
Prepare for the Next School Year

Independence now makes the transition back to school smoother.
Practice Putting on Shoes & Backpack
Encourage Toileting Independence (if age-appropriate)
Read Together Daily: to build focus and self-learning habits
Independence isn’t about doing everything alone—it’s about giving children the tools and trust to try. This summer, embrace small moments where your child can take the lead. Celebrate their efforts, even if things aren’t perfect. By nurturing independence now, you’re helping them grow into capable, confident learners. Wishing you a joyful and empowering summer!
