From Wellington to Oxbridge
It was a blend of familiarity and novelty when we reunited with Ted on the Oxford University campus after several years. His remained as courteous and warm as ever, but his conversations now revealed a depth of wisdom and maturity.

Ted and Dr Yang Yang, Master of Wellington College Tianjin Reunited at the Wellington College China London Alumni Gathering.
Reflecting on his days at Wellington College Tianjin, Ted spoke with gratitude. The encouragement and guidance from his former teachers helped him navigate challenges and carve out a clear path for the future. He still cherishes the carefully curated mathematics books his teachers sourced from around the world. The habits and interests he developed at Wellington continue to benefit his studies and life today. His deep affection for his alma mater has kept him closely connected with the community. Ted frequently helps younger pupils with academic queries and, despite his busy schedule, volunteers as an interviewer for mock university entrance exams.

Speaking about his experiences at Cambridge and Oxford, Ted admitted that he once strove for perfection in every exam. However, letting go of his obsession with grades allowed him to appreciate the deeper significance of mathematics. He wants to apply his research to solve real-world problems. To this end, he is continually expanding his horizons, exploring the potential applications of mathematics in a variety of fields.
We call our graduates ‘Old Wellingtonians’ or OWs because, in our eyes, they never really leave us. Once a Wellingtonian, always a Wellingtonian. And it is in this spirit that we have launched We.Connect, a new alumni platform that brings the Wellington College China Community a wide range of benefits — from networking opportunities to mentorship programmes and so much more.
