This past week we have had lots of fun training together as part of our professional development to prepare for the new academic year. Staff training at the beginning of the academic year is extremely beneficial for teachers and has an important impact on pupils’ success. This year we have had training in the uses of Generative AI, Coding, Oracy and English Language Acquisition, Characteristics of Effective Learning, the Sunshine Club, and have enjoyed getting to know one another better through Team Building.

The professional training provides us with valuable insights and updated information on the latest teaching methods, technologies, and educational tools. This can significantly improve our teaching skills, allowing us to engage pupils more effectively and create a more stimulating learning environment. The training also allows us to collaborate and share ideas with colleagues. This enables us to discuss new teaching strategies and best practices, which can, in turn, improve pupil outcomes and generate positive results. Lastly, professional training supports the development of our strong and effective school culture. When we are given the opportunity to learn and grow, we feel valued and appreciated, which fosters a sense of community and collaboration. This can lead to a more supportive and positive workplace, which ultimately benefits pupils and their holistic success.

The Sunshine Club is a whole-school positive behaviour programme that empowers students to develop mental, emotional, and social aspects of their learning to better handle academic challenges. It was founded by Helen Heatley, a drama teacher with over 25 years of experience, and co-founded by the play therapist Martina Resende. At the core of the programme is the belief that self-confidence can unlock a world of potential, supported by developing life skills like social and cognitive skills, and emotional coping skills. The club aims to equip students to face the challenges of life with greater confidence and resilience by fostering critical thinking, communication, empathy, self-evaluation, problem-solving, and stress-management skills. Teachers leading the programme create a positive and thriving learning environment for their pupils to thrive socially, emotionally, and intellectually.

Darren Coxon, Founder of Coxon AI, conducted a one-day training workshop on Generative AI in education at our school. The workshop aimed to introduce generative AI, demonstrate its potential applications, and provide hands-on training for staff to apply AI in their respective roles. Staff received practical demonstrations of AI-generated schemes of work, resources, and materials, and explored how AI can be used to support school leadership, teaching, and learning at multiple levels. The event was a huge success, fostering collaboration, ongoing learning, and a shared vision for AI integration to support staff.

Team building at the start of the academic year is a lot of fun and has a positive impact on both teachers and pupils. Building better working relationships through team building activities can lead to more effective lesson planning, better communication and a more positive working environment. It also increases morale, helps teachers deal with the stress of the new academic year and enhances pupil success. By working together as a team, teachers can share best practices and support their pupils more effectively. The After School Academy did a great job organizing fun and challenging team building activities like quizzes, puzzles, dances, location finding and photography.
