At Wellington College Tianjin, we celebrate our rich reading culture with various events such as World Book Day, Book Fairs, Author visits and “Dress Up as a Book Character”and more, encouraging all members of the Wellington community to enjoy the beauty of reading.
In the past summer term, we have successfully organised the Summer Book Fair. During the event, we had the privilege of welcoming renowned Chinese author and screenwriter Sun Rui. He delivered a speech on the scientific topics covered in his books to our Junior School pupils in the Theatre. Additionally, he personally signed copies of his books sold at the fair, making them cherished additions to the children's bookshelves and creating unforgettable memories of their personal interaction with an author.

Reading for pleasure is transformative for pupils' academic success and personal wellbeing. Encouragement from parents and teachers to read helps children expand their knowledge of the world and improve their language skills, fostering a love of reading from an early age. This ensures that reading is not seen as a tedious or boring task, but rather as an enjoyable and enriching activity that can have profoundly positive effects on their lives. Like any skill, reading requires practice. Initially, children may encounter difficulties focusing, but reading is like exercising a muscle. Over time, both their reading speed and comprehension will improve.
Along with sharpening your mind, reading offers significant mental health benefits.
Finding Connection
Mental health has been shown to be strongly associated with relationship quality and human connection. Reading can help develop healthy relationships by awakening emotions and fostering empathy. Research shows that connecting with fictional characters enhances understanding of human experiences and improves real-life interactions.
Reducing Stress
Reading has been found to effectively lower stress levels after just thirty minutes. Reading allows you to escape your own mind and live another life for a short time. This imaginative escape can be a healthy way to distract yourself from the stress of daily life.
Improve Mental Flexibility
Reading encourages you to see perspectives outside your own, enhancing creative problem-solving. Studies find that complex concepts, such as those in poetry, stimulate the brain and improve mental flexibility, making behavioural changes and habit-breaking easier.
Have a wonderful summer and happy reading!
