Amy, from South Korea, joined Wellington College Tianjin with her two older sisters when the school was founded in 2011. Amy spent 13 years studying here, and Wellington has long been a home away from home for her.

"The Wellington journey develops the well-rounded person"

Amy’s 13-year journey at Wellington has shaped her character and fostered her growth into an elegant young lady. She is grateful for the comprehensive support provided by the school, from academic achievement to the cultivation of interests and hobbies. In terms of learning, her performance in IGCSE and A-level has been excellent.

“Self-discipline is a key life skill”

As someone with strong self-discipline, Amy believes that this is very important, not only for studying but for doing pretty much everything in life successfully. In terms of developing this skill, she feels that self-discipline comes from the motivation to accomplish a goal.

Amy explains that her parents never tried to steer her towards a specific career but simply told her to find something that she wanted to do, guiding her to create her own targets. She finds this useful now because she is very independent and can think for herself.

From the Housemistress

“I have had the pleasure of knowing Amy for over a decade. I can still recollect a time when young Amy sat beside me reading a graded reader while pointing at each word with her tiny finger. It warms my heart to witness her incredible growth and progress since then.

She has demonstrated herself to be an outstanding pupil at Wellington. Amy, you are a star in the making! Congratulations and shine on!” Ms Tracey Xu, the Housemistress of the Anglesey, shared with us.

Originally, Amy had chosen to study Biochemistry and she received offers from the University of Edinburgh, University College London, and King's College London, as well as invitations to interviews with the University of Oxford. However, in her Oxford interview, when the professors asked why she wanted to study Biochemistry, she realised that she had a strong interest to study Medicine. Explaining more about this, Amy said that she wants to become a doctor not only because she can save people in danger and contribute to society, but also because she can give a helping hand when people around her encounter danger. For this reason, Amy made a bold decision to resubmit her application and change her major to medicine. After two months of waiting, Amy successfully received an offer to study for a medical major at Seoul National University.

Seoul National University is one of the top public universities in South Korea, ranking 41st in the 2024 QS World University Rankings. Since this university is ranked first in the medical major rankings in South Korea, achieving admission is very difficult.

When asked about her intended career path, Amy said that at first, she had wanted to become a surgeon, but she had recently come to believe that physician is also interesting. She hopes to obtain dual committee certification, which means she can become both a surgeon and a physician.

In school, she not only achieved high grades but also made many friends and gained various invaluable experiences. These experiences will be a huge asset in her future life, helping her forge ahead.

For younger pupils, her advice is to follow the requirements and guidance provided by the school, be proactive, fully utilize the extracurricular opportunities provided by the school, and participate more in various activities.

Finally, Amy expressed her thanks to her parents, teachers, friends, and everyone who has supported her and contributed to her becoming the person she is today. Her commitment is: “I'll continue to develop myself and be someone you can continue to be proud of, for you as well as for myself.”
