The Hangzhou Wellington campus hosted the First Wellington College China Annual Staff-Parent Football Tournament. On a sunny afternoon, 10 teams from all the schools in the group came together to participate in a football competition. Each parent, staff or mixed team played 5 to 6 matches on a 7-aside football field. After a very strong performance, the Shanghai Wellington-Hiba Staff team managed to take the Championship trophy back home.
Tianjin sent two teams with almost 20 players. With a respectable 7th and 9th place our teams performed well. Both teams worked hard and showed good potential for their next matches. One of the players, Jeff Ma came 1 goal short to be the tournament top-scorer.
However, no matter winning or losing, the tournament result wasn’t the main priority. That was sportsmanship, integrity, teamwork and comradery within your team and with other players in the Wellington Group. In this, the Tianjin teams excelled.

After the matches, all the players joined for a well-deserved barbeque. It was a unique opportunity for staff and parents to mingle and share a few drinks with peers from other schools; probably the first of its kind in the group’s history.
The Tianjin players who stayed overnight, visited some of Hangzhou’s famous tourist sites on Sunday, like the West Lake and the finish point of the Grand Canal of China. This made the trip down to Hangzhou even more memorable.
One day after the tournament representatives from Shanghai Wellington and Nantong Hiba offered to host the 2025 event. All Tianjin Wellington parents are invited to join our Friday football to be well prepared for next year. We will organize several matches and fun activities, like the upcoming Father’s Day football tournament-BBQ. We hope that many sign up so that we can grow and improve our Parents' team.
You don’t have to be a Messi or Zidane to be eligible to play, the main objective for the football activities is to have fun whilst practising arguably the most fun sport in the World!
