Annual Youth Football Tournament

The Wellington College International Tianjin Annual Youth Football Tournament is always one of the school’s highlights on its sports calendar. This year Wellington hosted its 5th and largest edition of the tournament on May 7th. During this beautiful Spring-day, the school received 44 teams from all over the wider Tianjin area, including 4 Wellington school teams. 

On our school’s football pitch, divided into four smaller fields, over 440 players competed in 119 matches to win this year’s cup. During the competition our Year 2-7 boys were playing in three different age groups: U8, U10 and U12 and our girls’ team mainly included players from Year 6-7. 

 

While all Wellington players and those of other local schools and clubs did their best to compete in a fair, respectful and sportsmanlike manner, two teams from Wellington managed to exceed expectations. Our Boys U8 finished 4th out of 14 teams after losing in the Semi-finals against Bravo Football Club 1-0 in a tight game. The Girls’ team did a wonderful job snatching up the 3rd place trophy.  

At the end of the tournament, our Master Dr. Yang gave the well-deserved cups to the top-3 teams. The cups were received with great enthusiasm by the winning teams, but also the teams without a trophy showed their sportsmanship and cheered for the winner. At the end of the day, all the children went home with a smile and a healthy tan on their faces.
