Wellington Pupils Win at North International Music Competition
What is better than marking the end of a term with a win at an international music competition? Six young musicians from our school participated in the preliminary round of the North International Music Competition and guess what? All six pupils who represented the school won a prize and qualified for the global round!
In the individual solo plucked string category, Alice (Year11) won third prize and Matthew (Year 7) won second prize. In the duo category, there were two duos from our school participating; Emma (Year 8) and Linda (Year 8) won third prize, and Emily (Year 10) and Vivien (Year 10) got first prize. All these young musicians were first-time participants in an external music competition.
The North International Music Competition, endorsed by ASDAN, is one of the earliest online competitions, and since 2017, nearly 4,000 contestants from over 40 countries and 500 cities have participated in the competition.
When asked about the reason they participated in this competition, although each of them came from different background, all said it was hours of practice which had let them there. They unanimously recognised the importance of gaining experience from international music competitions and how beneficial it is to young musicians to have such an experience.
Asked if there was anything memorable in the preparation for the competition, Emily and Vivien said the duo experience was fun and it was all about teamwork. There was also something else that they looked forward to besides the musical experience, “we had good food together,” said the duo. Matthew expressed how happy he was upon learning that he got a prize, he said “I was eager to share the good news”.
The six young musicians have all entered the global round, let’s hope the good news will come when the Lent term starts.
