Chinese Reading by Heart

02 Nov 2022

From Ms. Shen

The Mandarin Department

Before the age of six is the key period for  children to read independently. The children's language world develops at an amazing speed. Children begin to understand the relationship between symbols and meaning, learn how they treat books, and begin to explain the contents of the world in their own language. Therefore, it is particularly important to cooperate with children's interests to select good books of appropriate age. The children learn to read and then learn through reading with the guidance of schools and parents.

Both Wellington College International Tianjin and Wellington College Bilingual Tianjin Nursery support all our readers in developing lifelong reading habits and promote reading values beyond the skills.

As the saying goes, "There are three ways to read, that is to say, the heart, the eyes and the mouth." As early as 2020, Tianjin Wellington Bilingual Nursery successfully carried out Chinese Guided Reading. Children enjoyed reading from the mouth to the heart. Wellington Tianjin insists on integrating the reserves of traditional Chinese cultural knowledge into daily teaching and uses Mandarin recitation as a platform to enhance pupils' confidence and make them enjoy the fun of reading.

YEAR 1

We held the first Chinese Reading by Heart Competition for Y1 and Y2 pupils last year, and we have received very positive feedback. This year, we expand the competition into Y3, Mandarin Native and Non-Native groups.

YEAR 2

The competition was incredible, some of the stories were so long and they recited so professionally, the pupils were so inspirational. It encourages pupils’ creativity and helps them develop communication skills on the stage. The event not only showcased our talented pupils but also demonstrated the wonderful partnership between Nest and Junior School pupils.

YEAR 3

By reading many good books may our Wellington pupils enhance their lives and those around them. Reading is a lifelong journey and should be nurtured as reading brings knowledge and with this knowledge, we can journey through life with confidence.
