Wellington Golf Scholar Wins Hangzhou Championship

12 Jul 2022

The Wellington College Tianjin community unites in celebrating victory for 16-year-old golfing sensation, Dana.

On Sunday 10th July, Dana, an amateur player enrolled at Wellington as part of the school’s elite athlete programme, won her first senior professional tournament, the Hangzhou International Golf Championship, played at the Guanyuan Golf Club in Moganshan.

Dana was a wildcard entry for the tournament and is just the tenth Amateur Champion in the history of the Women’s Chinese Tour. Her final-round score of 64 meant she ended the tournament on -22, enough to win the trophy by two shots from her nearest rival.

Dana trains with Michael Chong and the team at Fyla Golf as part of Wellington’s elite athlete scholarship programme. Golfers such as Dana follow a specially designed timetable combining lessons, training and playing, allowing her time not just to compete against the very best professionals in China, but also to study for admission to her dream university in the USA when she graduates from the school.

The elite athlete scholarship offers up to 100% of fees and is a part of the wider scholarship programme at Wellington. Academic high-achievers can be awarded a prestigious Shuping Scholarship, paving the way for their application to the world’s top universities. In recent years, Shuping Scholars from the school have gone on to win places at Cambridge, UPenn, Seoul National University, Imperial College and many more.

Julian Jeffrey, the Executive Master at Wellington, was delighted. “Dana is obviously a very special talent, but people often forget how hard such young athletes work to play at this level. She is totally dedicated to her sport and her studies, often working late into the night to catch up on school work even whilst she plays tournaments across the country. The work that Fyla Golf do with our golf team is quite extraordinary, and it was lovely to see Dana acknowledge the contribution of coach Michael Chong and his team in her victory speech. Well done, Dana – the school will certainly celebrate this achievement in full once we are back for the new school year in August.”

Congratulations once again to the wonderfully talented Dana: she is an inspiration to all our community in Tianjin!
