A Celebration of Poetry and Music

Poetry and music have been intertwined for thousands of years. In antiquity, poems were often sung: the first lyric poets in ancient Greece performed their work to the accompaniment of the lyre, and the oldest anthology of Chinese poetry, the Shijing, was a collection of songs.
We are always transfixed and transported to other lands and worlds through the medium of the performing arts. The performing arts play a hugely significant role in helping children to develop their creative skills. Educational theorists are increasingly emphasizing the importance of ‘emotional intelligence’, developing a creative mind, and fostering personalities and imaginations as children make their journey through school, to become happy and well-rounded individuals. While Performing Arts allow children to develop creative passions, they simultaneously teach children language and communication skills, helping them to communicate effectively with others with confidence.
Over the course of this term, the children have been given opportunities to enthral the audience with their talent and passion. We have been treated to a variety of poetic and musical performances, delivered by children from years 2-6, watching our young pupils reciting confidently and performing musical pieces with aplomb.
Unfortunately, due to our current school lockdown, our scheduled ‘Evening of Poetry and Music’, was unable to go ahead the way we would have liked – in school. Not wanting to end the term without a final celebration of a variety of these young people, and realizing ‘the show must go on’, we put together a video of children who have volunteered to showcase their musical talent or poetic acts for us to enjoy. We hope you are entertained by these dedicated and enthusiastic musicians and performers!
Our Junior School is committed to providing all students with opportunities for creative expression, to build oracy and self-confidence in performing to an audience. Next term we are excited to announce that we will be joining the Senior School in taking part in Shakespeare Week; and our summer show, which will showcase our dramatic, singing, dancing and instrumental talents, is set to be ‘Thank you for the Music!’ featuring songs by Abba. We have much to look forward to!
