Wellington Pupils Outperform UK Peers in Historic IGCSE Results

13 Aug 2021

Just 48 hours after the news of record-breaking results for Wellingtonians in AS and A Level examinations comes the news that their younger counterparts in year 11 have also achieved historic IGCSE results. 56% of all grades were awarded an A*, and overall, 79% of grades were A*/A, far outperforming their peers in the UK who averaged 30% for A*/A. The hard work of these pupils over the two years of the IGCSE course has been hugely impressive in the context of the disruptions of 2020 and everyone in the Wellington community joins in congratulating them on their achievements.

99%  A*-C

Their success in these crucial examinations helps to pave the way for the next stage in their education, and of course, ultimately these grades will prove enormously important for university applications.

The Head of the Senior School, Mr Raja Ali, was overjoyed, “We as a team feel proud that we have equipped our young people with the qualifications and qualities that will give them the strongest foundation for success in their lives and inspire them to go out and make a difference to others.”

Pupils take their IGCSEs at the age of 16 years, studying up to 10 subjects for examination. Pupils aspiring to the world’s top universities typically need to attain the very highest grades across all these subjects to be considered for admission to an undergraduate degree course.

“For more than half of all these examinations to be awarded the top grades is a testament to the exceptional ability and dedication of our pupils and their teachers,” noted the Master, Mr Julian Jeffrey, “They are an inspiration to our entire community.”

The results this week show that, at every age group, Wellingtonians in Tianjin achieved more than half their grades at the highest possible level. “This success has been made possible by the dedicated support and expertise of our teachers; they all have my profound thanks,“ added Mr Jeffrey.
