Boarding is long-held tradition at Wellington College in England. Several Wellington College China schools build upon this tradition as well. Our boarding facilities at Wellington College Tianjin,Hiba Academy Nantong and Wellington College Hangzhou are places where pupils can cultivate the Wellingtonian Identity and Values. They expand their horizons in an immersive international and bilingual learning environment. They learn to become independent and self-reliant and to explore their interests in greater depth. More importantly, they form friendships that will last them a lifetime.

Boarding at the Benson House accelerates the process of pupils being prepared for life beyond further education, in line with the Wellington College values and identities.  Pupils develop their independence and level of responsibility in a supportive environment, are better able to self-regulate, and learn the value of time and positive relationships.  Boarders gain key life skills and are encouraged to have a healthy balance between study and leisure, pursue and explore different interests and hobbies, and are supported around the clock in their academic, pastoral, and social needs.  Boarders develop into confident, articulate, and resilient young men and women who are ready to take on the challenges that studying and working abroad brings, because of their experiences at Wellington College International Tianjin.

The Benson boarding house is a ten minutes’ walk away from the college. Safety is always our number one priority, and we work hard to ensure all students at Benson learn from a place of emotional, mental, and physical security. Many other top schools may offer similar promises, but where we differ is in our commitment to developing and maintaining a truly global context for all learning, in an environment where all voices are heard. We're committed to inspiring the next generation of leaders, but just as committed to making them compassionate, understanding, and informed citizens of the global community. Our Benson alumni consistently report that their boarding experience helped with the transition to higher education, making them more independent, organized, self-confident, and better prepared to make decisions on their own. They also began their college years with better study habits than many of the non-boarding peers they met in college.

Academic Journey
How does Wellington College China school support you to develop holistically and thrive happily?
Nicole
Wellington College Tianjin Class of 2021

I am able to participate in many extracurricular activities such as music, sports and singing, which gave me an outlet from my study and made me a better all-round person. For most of the experiences I have had, Wellington has been at the foundation. I feel that being around people from different backgrounds has given me a much broader perspective on the world.

really love debate, and it has changed me a lot. You spend a lot of time carefully crafting your arguments on a given topic. But debates also require a lot of preparation, and this has taught me how to work better as a member of a team. Hiba has provided me with ample opportunities for learning and practice.

Stepping into the Future
How has the Wellington College China experience helped you in your university and career?
Daniel
Class of 2020 Wellington College International Shanghai

I’ve been in Wellington since the very beginning as a founding member. It’s a fantastic experience to see how the school has grown from a very small population to such a big community now. One thing I always felt about Wellington is that it is always a bonded family to me. People here are more than just friends.  Whenever I come back here, it always makes me feel very good, like home does. The teachers and staff here also helped me become who I am today — independent, open-minded, organised and to be able to express my opinions clearly. I think these are the skills I can take on from Wellington to my life in the future.

The Wellington experience has enabled me to integrate more quickly into American life. Firstly, it helped me to overcome the language barrier early. Secondly, it gave me the courage to communicate and express myself. Finally, Wellington's courses are more diverse and help to stimulate our creativity. All of this has benefited me during my time at university.
